Well here we are, a new decade already, looking back at 2009...a year many of us will not forget quickly and in most cases one we will want to put behind us as we focus on 2010... In most cases we will define how successful this year will be by how well our teams perform... and our teams will be defined by the quality of people we have in them.

Prepare for Take-Off: look after your ground staff...
I was at a Christening yesterday and saw an old acquaintance... whilst we were waiting to go into the church we got chatting in a small group and he very quickly told us that he received a bit of a shock on Friday... as part of a global rationalisation strategy he was made redundant...He had been in finance all his working life and the past nine years with the same company... and after all things are supposed to be getting better, so the shock is understandable.

Net your candidates...
There is always talk about passive and active candidates... "active candidates" being those who are responding to ads, getting their resumes in front of as many recruiters and potential employers as possible and "passive candidates" being those who have registered an interest usually with one recruiter only and usually with the open brief of "let me know if something comes along", these candidates are usually already working and as a result can be more discerning.

It seems there is a new world... social networking... and there are now a plethora of articles on the internet about this phenomena and how it will change our world... and I am sure they are true..

The Perfect candidate?
Last month's article finished by saying
There is one test that will tell you every time whether someone is a professional recruitment specialist... they will be the ones who are prepared to walk away from work. A professional recruitment specialist is judged by their results and if they are not confident of getting a result they will walk away... next month we will discuss the why, this is so important...

Specialisation
In my previous article we looked at the 'big illusion' surrounding the current economic climate. In that article we discussed what appears to be a candidate rich market due to the high number of applicants, is merely a result of the ease with which applications can be sent today and that this does not necessarily translate into increasing the probability of finding the right candidate for the right job.

I am a great believer in the uncomplicated approach and in this article I will step back and give the reader a "common sense" view of what is really happening with our candidate market.
